CMS web sites: how much planning should I do before I get stuck in building?
If you're building a fairly simple site with a CMS, how much planning would/should you do before getting stuck in building your pages?
My IT education would tell me I should plan everything in detail before I start building. On the other hand, with a CMS it feels like the final site is a "negotiation" between the site you have in mind, and the sort of things that the CMS makes it easy to do -- and going in with a detailed plan will just lead to disappointment and frustration. What's the right balance between designing carefully and just getting stuck in? If you were teaching somebody to build a web site in Joomla! or WordPress or Drupal, how much planning would you encourage them to do before they start building?
