Thinking about Self Publishing? 5 Reasons to Consider Packt Instead
If you're thinking of self publishing a technical "how to" book, please consider contacting Packt and at least discussing the possibility of publishing with us. There's no question that self publishing is a very compelling option in many cases, but not always. Here are 5 reasons why working with a publisher -- specifically with Packt -- might be the better choice for you:

- Editorial input and assistance as you write. We'll help you to shape your book and make it as good as possible. We'll get it tech reviewed, offer you feedback, and provide expert guidance on what works -- based on our publishing experience.
- Layout and production work done for you. You just supply the manuscript in a word processor format, we turn it into a book. You don't need to worry about layout, preparing artwork, and so on.
- Marketing and distribution done for you. We'll ensure the book is available widely, and we'll do lots of marketing work to ensure that your book gets in front of customers.
- Much higher sales (almost certainly). Packt already has a popular books on sale on a wide variety of topics, and more on the way. Even though self publishing will enable you to keep a much higher share of revenues, a Packt book will usually sell so much better that you'd end up making more money with us. The exception to this might be if you already have a loyal following of thousands of potential readers of the book (think 37Signals -- they chose self publishing, and it was the right choice for them.)
- An advance. We will pay you an advance during your time writing. Whether or not the book sells, any money we pay you as an advance is yours to keep. So by working with us, you get guaranteed income before the book sells a single copy.
